Students Get 4 Years in Jail for Fraud

Buganda road grade one Magistrate Stella Amabirisi has sentenced three people including two Senior 4 students in their vacation, to spend four years in jail after they were found guilty of Electronic Fraud and operating telecommunications apparatus without a licence.

The convicts are Kagulire Ibrahim, Musasizi Dennis (students) and Bingi Maxie.

These are said to have used a GSM gateway machine between June 2019 and January 2020 to unlawfully intercept international calls, disguising them as local calls, thereby causing both MTN Uganda and the government over 400 million shillings loss.

The machine also known as a sim box can accommodate over 1000 sim cards.

During their guilty plea, the convicts asked the Magistrate for a lenient sentence, saying they were looking for tuition to facilitate their further studies

“Your worship we pray for forgiveness because we were being trained to operate these machines by individuals who are currently on the run,” they added.

The Magistrate however, after hearing from Counsel Kenneth Seguya from Uganda Communications Commission that these offences are rampant, decided on the four year sentence which she said would be deterrent.
