A bodaboda cyclist in Mukono district was shot in the knee by a stray bullet, Police has said
This was revealed by Kampala Metropolitan Police on Friday in a clarification statement released by spokesperson SP Patrick Onyango.
According to Onyango, there have been social media posts circulating that during yesterday’s joint security operation that was aimed at enforcing the Presidential directives, that two people were shot in Mukono.
“This is not true.” he said
“The fact is that yesterday (26/3/2020) around 1200hrs a motorcyclist carrying two passengers was stopped at Jinja Misindye LCI, Misindye ward, Goma Division, Mukono District, by Police Officers and he defied the order. The officers used all means to make him stop and the Motor cycle was parked aside.”
He adds that locals and the rider decided to forcefully remove the motorcycle from Police and that Officers tried to talk to them but they continued to advance towards one Police Officer who fired warning shots.
“Unfortunately, a stray bullet hit the Rider of the motorcycle a one Alex Oryem on the left knee. He was riding motorcycle Reg No. UDM 919B.”
The injured person was rushed to Mukono Health centre for treatment.
According to eye witnesses, The Rider deliberately refused to comply and attacked the officers on duty, then other people joined.
Police also clarified that it is only one person who was injured not two as alleged on social media.
“We want to appeal to the general public to adhere to the Presidential directives other than confronting security personnel because the exercise helps all of us irrespective of the institution,” Onyango said
Relatedly, by the end of day one of the lockdown, 39 youths were arrested for participating in criminal activities around Kampala.
These have been arraigned in court and charged with common nuisance on Friday.
The suspects include those that were seen in the viral video picking Pineapples and others who were looting down town.
