Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate Joan Ketty Acaa has released former Makerere researcher Dr. Stella Nyanzi and two others who were arrested on Wednesday as they protested against the continued closure of city arcades.
The three have denied the charges of being a public nuisance and through their lawyer, Geoffrey Turyamusiima, asked the court to release them on bail since the offenses are bailable and they have substantial sureties in court.
Nyanzi has informed court that she is not feeling well due to the injuries she sustained in the process of her arrest and thus needed to see her doctor.
The Magistrate has considered all the sureties presented as substantial and released each of the suspects at two hundred thousand shillings ( 200,000) non-cash while each of the sureties has been ordered to sign a non-cash bond of thirty million shillings.
The matter has been adjourned to July 23, 2020, for mention.
The prosecution contends that Stella Nyanzi and two others on July 8, 2020, at Nakasero in Kampala district demonstrated with placards pressurizing Government to open all city Arcades which have been closed as per the directives of President Museveni as a preventive measure for COVID19.
