Stella Nyanzi Remanded to Luzira Prison

Makerere University Researcher Dr. Stellah Nyanzi has appeared before Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate Esther Nahirya  for formal charges on offenses relating to attacking the privacy of President Museveni and his late mother, Esteri Kokundeka.

Nyanzi amused court as she asked for an interpreter to have the charges read to her in her local language (Luganda) as she repeatedly kept on reminding the interpreter to mention the exact words she used in the text.

Nyanzi is charged with 2 counts of cyber harassment and offensive communication in which the prosecution says she had an intention of disturbing the peace of President Museveni by posting obscene messages on her official face book page.

Its alleged that  Nyanzi committed these  offenses  on the 16th/September 2018 through an ironic birthday congratulatory message she dedicated to the president.

Nyanzi has however not been allowed to plead to the charges because grade one magistrate Esther Nahilya lacks jurisdiction to hear her charges.

Nyanzi has been remanded to Luzira prison until Friday this week when she will be brought back before  trial magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu for purposes of taking plea.

Nyanzi was last Friday picked by detectives as she tried to return to her office at Makerere after winning a court case against the institution.

The controversial don has been in and out of jail on charges related to insulting the President and his family members on her Facebook wall.
