Controversial Makerere lecturer Stella Nyanzi is being held
at Kiira Road Division Police Station in Wakiso District.
“She is here,” said Nyanzi’s lawyer Isaac Ssemakade at the police facility on Monday morning.
“I hope to see her soon,” he added.
Nyanzi was arrested this past Friday for using Facebook to post an article officials say abused President Museveni’s late mother, Esteri Kokundeka.
Nyanzi was picked by detectives as she tried to return to her office at Makerere after winning a court case against the institution.
CIID Spokesperson SP Vincent Ssekate was quoted as saying Nyanzi faced charges of “cyber harassment and offensive communication.”
According to Section 25 of the Computer Misuse Act 2011 on offensive communication, “Any person who wilfully and repeatedly uses electronic communication to disturb or attempts to disturb the peace, quiet or right of privacy of any person with no purpose of legitimate communication whether or not a conversation ensues commits a misdemeanour and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding twenty-four currency points or imprisonment not exceeding one year or both.”
Officials say Nyanzi was “hyper” when she was brought to Kiira Division Police Station but that she had “now cooled down.”
Nyanzi was at first detained at Police’s Special Investigations facility, Kireka, for interrogation.
A resident of Kungu, Wakiso, Nyanzi has been in and out of police detention for making disparaging remarks about the president’s family members.
