St Geralds Secondary School Nyakibale and Makobore High school Kinyasano in Rukungiri district have been closed and students ordered to go home following a violent fight between students of the two schools on Thursday night.
The order to close the schools was given by Justine Muhindo, the Rukungiri Deputy Resident District Commissioner after visiting the schools on Friday morning.
She gave the students 10 minutes to leave the campuses, except for those in candidate classes.
She said the district security committee made the decision in order to avert possible loss of lives.
St. Geralds SS students invaded Makobore High School with machetes and slashers but found Makobore students ready for them.
The clash that ensued left several injured, some in critical condition.
St Geralds students were reported trying to avenged against their counterparts at Makobore, who they accused of setting the fire that burnt their offices at the start of this month.
The fire destroyed the head teacher’s office and burnt documents and certificates of thousands of former students.
On Thursday, St Gerald’s students sneaked into the Makobore compound early in the morning, reportedly with a container full of fuel and deadly objects slashers and iron bars. These were however spotted by students who woke up early for morning studies who made an alarm and the fighting started.
The police officers that guard the school immediately called in reinforcements from the Central Police Station. 5 students were arrested and are being held at the station.
