State Minister for Sports Hamson Dennis Obua has Friday morning at Kyadondo Rugby grounds flagged off the Rugby Sevens squad that will take part in the 2020 World Rugby Sevens Challengers Series.

The two legs of the inaugural World Rugby Sevens Challengers Series will be played in South America in Vina del Mar, Chile 15-16 February and Montevideo, Uruguay 22-23rd February.

The Uganda Rugby Sevens team qualified for these after coming second in Africa Rugby Sevens last year.

Speaking on behalf of the players, Uganda Rugby Sevens captain Michael Okorach said, “I would like to congratulate the selected team because their hard work has paid off.

There is a full blend of talent and skills in the team named for the upcoming tournament, some have been on the scene before and the new ones have also got some good exposure. I’m so sure we are going to show how much talent we have in Uganda.”

Uganda was drawn in Pool C alongside Germany, Italy, and Paraguay. The group named today will have a chance to compete for the HDBC Sevens in Hong Kong.

“Go there to participate but in the process you will be competing for Uganda. Make sure you exercise this God given talent. We are lobbing some funds and advocating for more resources and will definitely consider the mega resource the Union earns from 250M to some huge amount,” said Obua.
