South Sudan Civil Society Boss Shot

South Sudan civil society has condemned an assassination attempt on the chairman of the country’s Civil Society Alliance (SSCSA), link check Deng Athuai.

The incident occurred on Friday night at South African park as he left for his hotel in Juba.

This is not the first time Deng is surviving a plot to take his precious life.

In 2011, hospital he was kidnapped, beaten and left unconscious near the riverside by unknown people.

“These intimidation tactics will not deter the civil society,” said a human rights activist in the country who preferred anonymity.

Police are yet to apprehend suspects in the case.

Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), a civil society group said in a statement that government must commence investigations into the incident that has sent shivers down the spine of South Sudan’s civil society.

“It is a shocking and unfortunate situation that now activists are targeted by armed person. CEPO believes that our government is capable and should take this case seriously till the person or people behind the plan of taking Deng Athuai away are held accountable in the court of law,” reads part of the statement.


“This is the moment that all South Sudanese should for working for peace not taking away lives of person or people. This time, we are demanding accountability on this case. This practice sends strong messages to activists across the country that their lives are at risk”.

Deng has previously blasted government and rebels loyal to Dr Riek Machar over the fighting that left a trail of bloodshed and destruction in the country.
