Sophie Gombya, the chairperson of Umbrella body for all musicians in Uganda (Uganda Musicians Association UMA) has resigned from the position.
The singer has already expressed interest to join active politics.
In her resignation letter, Gombya revealed that she has confidence that Wyclif Tugume aka Ykee Benda who has been her deputy will be in position to perform beyond expectations.
“I must submit my resignation from the position of President Uganda Musicians Association for career reasons, with a notice of one month from today. The Association’s constitution doesn’t permit us to practice politics, and I have decided to run for Woman Councillorship in Kampala Capital City Authority,” she said.
She appreciated the support which was rendered to her by the Executive Committee, fellow musicians, Hon Rebecca Kadaga, Major General Elly Kayanja, Hon Nakiwala Kiyinji and their Patron Hon Captain Mike Mukula.
“I wish to stay for a month following this submission, and I’m happy to help in the transition process and/or assist in training my replacement via video conferencing. Please accept my sincere apologies and help in the transition.”
In May 2019 Gombya came in to office as the head of the Association after successfully winning the elections.
She now joins a growing list of musicians and artistes who have expressed interest to stand for various positions of power in the forthcoming 2021 general elections.
