Soldiers Rescue Police Driver from Angry Residents

DOKOLO: Sporadic gunshots on Friday evening rocked Dokolo town as security personnel engaged in running battles with irate residents who attempted to attack a Police driver.

The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) soldiers reportedly fired live bullets to disperse rowdy residents who had blocked a police vehicle after it ran over a two-year-old child. The victim has been identified as Eugine Okul.

The North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, Mr Peter Nkulega, confirmed the army intervened in the situation to calm down the rowdy residents.

Mr Lawrenec Egole, the area Resident District Commissioner, said the violent uprising started after a Police vehicle number UP4756 reversed and stepped on a child.

The vehicle was being driven by a police officer, Mr Maxwel Ogwal, who is being held at Dokolo Central Police Station.

The vehicle had just returned from Agwata Police Post where it had gone to pick up a police officer.

The driver came back and parked the vehicle in Dokolo town, but as he was reversing, he accidentally stepped on the child, the RDC saidon Sunday.

“Upon being informed by people who were also behind the car, the driver immediately rushed the child to Dokolo health center IV.  Unfortunately, the child was pronounced dead minutes later. This prompted residents to launch an attack with intent to burn down the vehicle,” he said.

The RDC said a security meeting had been organised with the deceased family to forge a way forward.
