The army has commenced investigations into circumstances under which a soldier opened fire at a bar in Gulu on Saturday night, killing three people instantly.
Defence Spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire told ChimpReports on Sunday that the shooter was detained.
“The UPDF 4 Division Commander Brig Emanuel Kanyesigye has caused the immediate arrest of Lance Corporal Geoffrey Odaga, the Soldier who last night misused his weapon in an unlawful shooting,” said Karemire.
“This incident which led to the death of three revellers in a bar at Kabedopong in Gulu is very regrettable,” he added.
It remains unclear whether the soldier was drunk or provoked by revellers.
“We cannot not speculate on that,” said Karemire, adding, “Investigators should be able to tell us but even when provoked, that is not how to respond unless in self defence from equally armed people.”
Under the influence of alcohol, soldiers have previously shot revelers in bars.
Karemire said investigations have “commenced by a team of UPDF and Uganda Police Force into the circumstances surrounding this incident.”
The gun used has also been recovered and exhibited by the investigators.
The identities of the deceased were yet to be established.
“Our condolences and sympathies go to the families of the victims as we condemn the action of the soldier,” said Karemire.
