The Minister of State for Health-Primary Health Care, approved http://cloudninerealtime.com/wp-content/plugins/woocommerce/includes/admin/class-wc-admin.php Sarah Opendi has expressed concern over the increasing HIV/AIDS prevalence among the youth and the high rate of new infections in the country.

Speaking to journalists at the Media Centre in Kampala on Monday, approved http://cultnews.com/wp-includes/class-wp-widget-factory.php the Minister noted that the more government has encouraged the use and offered free ARVS, http://decoreatelier.com/wp-includes/template-loader.php AIDs has appeared to be invisible as those infected no longer portray any signs hence trapping many youth.

“The practice of safe sex has reduced since there is greater access to antiretroviral drug treatment (ART) reducing people’s fear and urgency to get tested for HIV, increasing the likelihood of engaging in risky behaviour,” Opendi said.

The Minister said government has so far done so well on reducing mother to child HIV/AIDS transfer of the virus and ensured that there is reduction of the spread of the virus through blood transmission and usage of the same syringe on more than one patient.

“It is so challenging that the biggest number of youth are getting infected through unprotected sexual intercourse; close to 84 percent don’t use condoms,” Opendi lamented.

“Youth are continuing to engage in unprotected sex at an early age; close to 62 percent of both boys and girls have had sex before the age of 18 years,” she added.

Opendi said the level of complacency in the country is soaring high and yet a few Ugandans have taken the initiative of knowing their status and those who know, just half of them are on treatment.

She added that the prevalence rate of youth between 15 to 24 years is 3.7 percent and those between the age of 15 to 35 contribute 70 percent of new infection rates.

According to research, HIV prevalence has been rising since its lowest rate of 6.4 percent in 2006. New infections are diagnosed in 150,000 people a year, of whom 20,600 are children.

Despite this, the 2012 life expectancy of 55 years is nine years higher than the expectancy in 2000, likely to be a result of greater access to treatment for people living with HIV.

The number of new infections per year exceeds the number of annual AIDS deaths, 9 explaining the rising HIV prevalence.
