Samson Mpiira Named Dairy Development Authority Deputy Executive Director

Samson Akankiza Mpiira has been appointed Director Technical Services of Dairy Development Authority (DDA).

He will be deputizing the newly appointed executive director, Dr. Michael Kansiime.

Kansiime recently replaced Dr Jolly Zaribwende after the latter’s contract expired.

Mpiira works with the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) as Coffee Sustainability Manager.

DDA is an autonomous government agency under the agriculture, animal industry and fisheries ministry that is charged with advising government on policies that can help development, promotion and regulation of the dairy industry.

The new team comes at a time the dairy sector in the country is facing serious challenges pertaining to the fluctuation of milk prices to as low as Shs.300 a litre.

This situation has greatly angered farmers.

President Museveni, who recently attributed the fall in agricultural produce to the forces of demand and supply on the international market, told dairy farmers that as the domestic consumption market is small, producers must churn out quality products in order to target the international market which we must access with quality products.

Milk has a big market of US$480 billion annually.

Milk producers have previously requested government to avail them affordable loans to start their own cooperatives and build  own processing plants in order to preserve milk and access international markets.
