Rwanda: Street Kids’ Parents to be Held Accountable

Rwanda’s Minister for Gender and Family Promotion, see Dr. Diane Gashumba has said that parents of children found on the streets should be held accountable as to why their children are on the streets and not at school.

“Irresponsible parents should be held accountable and all entities should work together to get children off the streets and jointly ensure that all children go to school” she said.

Speaking at the periodic senior commanders meeting on Tuesday at the Rwanda National Police [RNP] General Headquarters in Kacyiru, Minister Gashumba spoke on child protection and partnership with the police and local leaders to end the presence of street children.

She pledged government commitment in this initiative and emphasized the need for police to support and protection to social rehabilitation centers for children, either government or private owned.

The senior commanders’ meeting brought together about 250 participants including commissioners, commanders and staff officers down to the police station level to discuss on the status of police operations mainly focusing on public order management, road safety, crime trends and investigations as well as other specialized police operations.

The meeting was also graced by the Minister for local government Francis Kaboneka. He  addressed the meeting on how best RNP in partnership with the Ministry of Local Government and local leaders in particular, can improve the social protection and jointly deal with social injustices as means to improve social security of the citizenry.

During the meeting, it was observed that crimes reduced by 12 percent between January and September this year.
