Over 500 farmers from Rushenyi County in Ntungamo district have petitioned President Yoweri Museveni seeking in his intervention over non-payment of Millions of shillings for the milk they supplied to a local company.
The farmers say they are owned up to Shs 670million by Birunga Dairy and accuse its proprietor, one Innocent Bisangwa, of refusing to pay them.
“We are now disgruntled with his actions and responses. Whoever attempts to communicate to him on phone or SMS or WhatsApp is either intimidated or abused,” reads part of the petition to the president.
John Bosco Ruhangasiimwe, one of the petitioners says due to the debt, the farmers have struggled over the past months with some unable to take care of their own families.
“Now some of us our children are about to report back to schools, we are so worried on where to get school fees from.”
Joseph Kanyesigye Nuunu another petitioner said they had decided to petition the president because he is passionate about farming.
Commenting about the matter, Bisangwa said he was working round the clock to have the farmers paid.
He blamed the problem on the salty relations that developed between Uganda and Rwanda which cut off part of his market.
“I am aware of this claim and I am now making a recapitalisation plan that will see me resume operations and I will be able to pay these farmers,” he said.
