Police in Rukiga district have in detention one of their own officers who is accused of shooting and injuring a Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) soldier during a quarrel.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi regional police spokesman says the incident took place yesterday at 10am in Kabirizi village, in Kamwezi sub county.
According to the police mouthpiece, PC Alex Twongeirwe who is attached to Kamwezi Police used is gun to shoot Sgt. David Mperize, a UPDF soldier attached to Makenke Army barracks in Mbarara.
The two, Maate says, picked a quarrel over a woman while drinking at a bar on Saturday night at around 9pm.
“Later on Sunday morning, the victim went to charge his mobile phone and he met the suspect (Twongyeirwe) who was armed and fully dressed in Police uniform,” Matte says.
“They exchanged bitterly and that’s when he shot him in the right leg and was then rushed to Rushebeya health Centre where he is in a stable condition”
Twongyeirwe was arrested and detained at Rukiga police station for interrogation and rifle no UG POL 565830383-28903 with 29 rounds of live ammunition was recovered and exhibited.
