Rukiga District Chairman Protests New Water Project

Rukiga District Chairperson Alexander Kampikaho yesterday exchanged pointed words with the district Woman Member of Parliament Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi and officials from the Ministry of Water, over a Shs 5 billion project to renovate and revamp piped water in the district.

This was during a meeting with village leaders of Rwamucucu Sub County.

Dr. Kampikaho accused   Kamusiime and officials from the Ministry of Water and Environment of coming to consult LC1 Chairpersons on the water project, without contacting and consulting the district leaders.

The chairman said he would not allow the project to start in the district, unless the officials write a report to him.

“This is a government project; you should know that we have leaders in Rukiga. We have the LC5 chairman. If I am not made to understand anything, I will stop it,” he warned.

Kampikaho also accused one Lavic Mucunguzi Kagooro, an administrator from the ministry’s South Western Umbrella of Water and Sanitation, of intimidating the local leaders and threatening to take the project elsewhere if they don’t support it.

However, Mucunguzi said he didn’t intimidate the chairpersons but wanted to implore them to look after the project so that the equipment is not misused.

On her part, MP Kamusiime apologized for not informing the district leaders in time and promised to do so in the future.

The project will involve rehabilitating water sources, pipes tanks and taps within the district.
