Rugby Cranes 29-39 South Africa Barbarians
Uganda Rugby Cranes (15s team) suffered defeat to South African Barbarians in a friendly encounter played at Legends Rugby Club on Saturday.
In one of the two games that the two teams have to face off, the Supa Babas as popularly called drew first blood winning the game 39-29.
The visitors were impressive right from onset despite efforts from the rugby Cranes to put up a fight and chase from behind.
Constant Beckerling open the scores touching home but Kurt Webster failed to make the conversion. Uganda responded with Ian Munyani scoring albeit James Ijongat failed on the conversion.
The Barbarians regained their lead through man of the match Ita Mpete and Webster this time was good in execution on the extras.
Uganda however was up for the challenge and Brian Asaba crossed the white chalk for their second try and Ivan Kirabo made the conversion.
The visitors pulled away towards the break with Webster making a try and conversion to lead 19-12 at the halfway mark.
The Rugby Cranes had the chance to close in on the gap upon resumption but Kirabo blasted a penalty wide and Mpete came punishing on the other end.
Skipper Mugerwa got his name on the score sheet and later on Munyani added another try, his second on the day.
Ijongat and Kirabo did well on the extras as the Cranes drew close.
However, the visitors surged in the closing stages with Webster adding a try to secure victory for the Supa Babas.
The two sides face off again on Monday at Kyadondo Rugby Ground in the final build up match.
The Rugby Cranes are in preparations ahead of the competitive season with Africa Gold Cup action around the corner. The team will face Namibia away in Windhoek in mid June.
