At least 8 people are nursing minor injuries after supporters of Kenneth Jogo Biryabarema, an independent candidate for the Rubanda East parliamentary race clashed with those of National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, Henry Ariganyira Musasizi.
The two groups clashed on Monday at St Mark Kashaki Catholic sub parish in Bubare sub county, where Biryabarema was going to meet voters from Kashaki A and Kashaki B.
It is alleged that Musasizi’s supporters blocked Biryabarema’s supporters who were heading for the campaign venue and a fight between the two groups ensued.
Some of those injured in the fight include Odo Betonde, Ronald Kateji, Catherine Sheila Komururu and Annet Tobius. Others were only identified as Medius, Edwin, Bruno and Yoona.
The situation was calmed by the Officer in Charge of Bubare police Post, Moses Potho who came with anti-riot police and the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) officers who fired teargas to disperse the crowd.
“Musasizi’s supporters are the ones who started the clash after they blocked the road with branches and blocked the church gate,” said Potho.
Godfrey Tibahikwa, the LCI chairman of Kashaki told our reporter that he had told Musasizi supporters to allow Biryabarema and his supporters to hold their rally but they refused saying that they cannot allow a protestant to campaign on catholic land.
While addressing his supporters, Biryabarema condemned the act of the rival supporters for blocking the road.
Musasizi, who is running for the third term is facing stiff competition from Mr Biryabarema, the Incumbent Rubanda district LC5 chairman.
