Two policemen and and one civilian were last night gunned down in a UPDF led operation in Makindye.
The deceased were shot while trying to rob a hired taxi that was carrying a foreign national from the airport.
The incident happened Sunday night at around 10pm at Nankinga Zone, in Bunamwaya, Makindye Sabagabo.
The criminals have been identified as Ambrose Byareta, a police constable who at the scene was wearing an army uniform, and Fred Turyomunsi who has been working in armoury at the Police Headquarters in Naguru.
The third member of the gang, who was wearing a military jacket was only identified as James.
These, Police says, were being tracked by army officers from the Rubaga Battalion on Sunday night.
At around 10pm, their Toyota Harrier cut off an airport taxi carrying a female foreign national.
“The thugs immediately jumped out and put the driver of the taxi on gunpoint. That was when the army officers who had been following, shot at them killing three of them instantly,” Police said.
“Both vehicles disappeared from the scene but information is that the airport taxi’s glasses were smashed.”
One pistol no. UG POL.36326006 03890 was recovered from the scene and Police at Katwe have since taken over the matter.
