Rioting Must Never be Repeated – Museveni

President Museveni has warned days of rioting in Uganda are no more, saying security forces will never tolerate what he described as “impunity” perpetrated by politicians and foreign backers.

The warning comes just a week after riots broke out in different parts of the country after the arrest of presidential candidates Patrick Amuriat and Robert Kyagulanyi for flouting COVID-19 prevention guidelines during their campaigns.

“If Hon Kyagulanyi (Robert) was arrested, his supporters should have waited for him to go to court like he eventually did,” said Museveni in a televised address this Sunday.

“The feeling that Kyagulanyi is untouchable because he is a politician and prompts people to riot must never be repeated,” he added.

“Criminals just see policemen and think that’s the security of Uganda. You can do whatever we want but you are not going to disturb Uganda, whoever you are,” warned Museveni.

“The attack on people wearing NRM/ yellow shirts; the attack on officers in uniform should never happen again. Whoever has ears should listen. You are not doing anyone a favor to keep the law,” said Museveni.

He said at least 54 people died in the riots.

Of these, 32 were rioters who were killed in confrontation with security forces, according to police report handed to Museveni by CIID boss Grace Akullo.

Several political groups have since called for investigations into the riot killings.

The Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi this Sunday called upon government to institute a special commission to carry out investigations into the death of more than 40 people from the recent countrywide demonstrations.

“Those who remember the history of this country when it was being led by the Military Government, in 1945 there was a demonstration were eight people lost their lives. A Commission of inquiry was put in place to investigate and establish the cause of their death,” said Kabaka.

Museveni also ordered Police to “audit phenomenon of people being killed by stray bullets.”

20 people died of stray bullets.

“What was the original purpose of the bullets before they strayed? Even without anti riot equipment you can firmly and humanely handle a riot,” said the President.

“We have cameras so there is nothing we will not see. The problem is you are attacking cameras. Why don’t you want cameras unless you are a criminal?” he charged.
