Dozens of residents of Nyagakenke Village in Muramba Sub County, Kisoro district on Wednesday morning marched and camped at the office of Kisoro RDC, demanding the release of the body of Jonas Abiyingoma, who was shot dead on Monday evening in Mgahinga National park.
The deceased was reportedly killed by park rangers who suspected him to be a poacher.
Residents after hearing the news were furious, demanding to know why the rangers used such excessive force to put down an unarmed, disabled man.
Hajji Shafiq Sekandi the Kisoro RDC later came out and addressed the locals at the district council Hall in a meeting that was attended by the Kisoro DPC Charles Okoto, Christopher Masaba the chief warden Mgahinga national park, Elias Nuwagaba.
Hajji Sekandi told the locals that police delayed to give them the body because post mortem had not been completed.
He assured them that the police are investigating the incident and that once the rangers are found to have wrongly shot Abiyingoma, they will be apprehended.
On his part, Masaba the Mgahinga park chief warden said that they do not know yet, exactly who might have Killed deceased and asked the locals to wait for police to conclude its investigations.
He said UWA deeply regretted the incident.
