Police in Hoima District have arrested eight men for assaulting a senior police officer over a land dispute involving the family of Bunyoro Kingdom prince.
Mr Edgar Nyabongo, the former Kidepo Regional Police Commander, who currently works at the Directorate of Chief Political Commissar, was attacked at the weekend in Parajwoki Cell, Bujumbura division in Hoima Municipality.
Mr Nyabongo had reportedly gone to check on his piece of land when he was attacked by the men who emerged from the bush.
They reportedly surrounded him, beat him up and robbed Shs3 million and a mobile phone from him.
According to Mr Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson, Mr Nyabongo was rescued by Mr Christopher Katumba, the Hoima District Police Commander, with the help of police officers.
The disputed land measuring 280 acres is located at Kasiro dairy farm in Parajwoki Bujumbura division Hoima Municipality.
It is alleged that the contested piece of land belongs to the family of the late Prince Hebert Kimera Rwakiswaza where Nyabongo also belongs.
Two siblings of the Late Rwakiswaza namely John Apollo Rwamparo and Sister Beatrice Kabasesera are feuding with Nyabongo over the land. They accuse Nyabongo of attempting to grab their family land forcefully for his personal gains.
According to police, Rwamparo and Kabasesera hired the suspects who assaulted Nyabongo who they accuse of using his position in the police force to threaten them.
Prince Apollo Rwamparo is the Tourism Minister in Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom. Their late father Prince Kimera died on March, 6th, 2015.
