Police has arrested six people in connection to the fire that gutted a school dormitory of St Bernard SS in Manya Rakai on Sunday night.
In a press briefing on Tuesday afternoon, the Police Spokesperson at Central Police Station in Kampala, SSP Emilian Kayima said investigations to establish the perpetrators in the nasty incident has kick started and so far six people including three students and school stuff have been detained for interrogations.
Kayima said all the nine bodies of the deceased have been taken to Mulago Hospital Mortuary for postmortem and samples taken to establish their DNA with that of their parents.
According to police, it has been established that the criminals said to have set the dormitory ablaze first locked it from outside not letting the over 60 occupants escape.
Kayima said despite a delay in the arrival of fire brigade due to the long distance, at least the neighboring residents rushed to the scene and helped rescue some students.
He said 37 students were injured in the tragedy and are now undergoing medication at Kitovu, Kalisizo and Masaka hospitals.
Kayima added that regional police commanders have since met the management of the school and agreed to close it as investigations take route.
“All classes not seating for national exams have been sent home, only S4 and S6 are at school right now,” he said.
He revealed the names of the deceased as, Masita Moris, Suuna Charles, Kasozi Emmanuel, Lutaaya Geofrey, Sekitende Antonio, Nsubuga Samuel and Tamale James, all in senior three.
