Nine students have been declared dead and several others injured in a night fire that gutted a dormitory at St Bernard Secondary School located in Manya Rakai district.
According to police, the fire started after around midnight and burnt down the Senior Three dormitory.
Emilian Kayima the Police Spokesperson said in a statement that local police intervened and rescued some students who are now admitted at kitovu Hospital for medication.
He said that police already established the names of the deceased students adding that “We shall not share them before we inform their parents.”
About the cause of the fire, Kayima said that there is a high suspicion that some ten students who were recently expelled have a hand in it.
He revealed that one of them has been apprehended for interrogation and investigation into the cause of the fire.
However, the tragedy has traumatized many students especially the Senior Six candidates who started exams today.
Despite the disorganization, police said that exams have commenced in other school premises.
The police publicist urged schools across the country to tighten up security on their premises in order to deter tragic situations.
