On Monday, September 14, 2020, members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) will elect flag bearers for urban councils and division mayors across the country.
For Kampala city, the Lord Mayor seat is a tough contest between Daniel Kazibwe, aka Ragga Dee, and Mr Ssebaana Kizito, a relative to the deceased former Kampala lord mayor Ssebaana Kizito.
Ragga Dee is not new to the politics having been elected as the NRM flag bearer in 2015 for the Lord Mayor seat. However, he lost to Mr Erias Lukwago during the 2016 general elections.
However, this time he says he is determined to defeat Mr Lukwago who has already declared intention to reclaim his seat on the FDC ticket
“Since 2017 I have been helping out the youth and women in the city through the Operation Wealth Creation and I can confidently say majority have benefited,” Mr Kazibwe said.
On the other hand, Mr Ssebaana says he is ready to prioritise the youth when he gets into power.
“I would like to show the party that the youths too are competent to hold big party positions and I am sure I will win this mayoral race because I have a message of peace and unity and economic empowerment which resonates well with most of the voters in Kampala,” he says.
However, history shows that Kampala Metropolitan area is an opposition stronghold. For instance in 2016 elections, the Opposition swept all the mayoral positions in all the divisions of Kampala.
