Dr Protazio Begumisa, the former commissioner of audit and compliance at the Uganda Revenue Authority has declared intentions to contest for the Ndorwa East MP seat in Kabale.
Dr Begumisa, who recently resigned from the tax body wants to unseat the long time area MP Wilfred Niwagaba who has held the seat since 2006.
Dr Begumisa says Ndorwa East has remained undeveloped and that its representative has failed to lobby for the area and spends most of the time fighting the government.
In the primaries, Dr Begumisa has to first overcome Grace Bwesigye Bekunda who lost to Niwagaba in the 2016 polls but has shown interest to stand again.
Niwagaba was in 2006 elected on the NRM ticket but in 2014 fell out with the party leadership leading to his expulsion from the party with MPs Mohammed Nsereko, Barnabas Tinkasimire and Theodere Ssekikubo. These were temporarily ejected from parliament before court reinstated them.
Now the Opposition shadow attorney general, Niwagaba in 2016 stood on an independent ticket and beat NRM’s Grace Bwesigye Bekunda.
