Investigations are underway to establish circumstances under which a top doctor in Iganga District, eastern Uganda was shot dead by gunmen on Friday night, Chimp Corps report.
Dr Ibra Gwaluka’s death was announced by Uganda Medical Association (UMA) boss, Dr Ekwaro Obuku on Saturday morning.
He said Dr Gwaluka was “shot dead at his home as he was getting back with his wife (who is a magistrate),” adding, “The wife escaped and is okay.”
The deceased served as the Superintendent of Kigandaalo Health Centre 4 in Mayuge district and Treasurer UMA Busoga Branch.
Cases of gunmen killing civilians in Eastern Uganda had stopped following massive arrests in the region.
It remains unclear if the gunmen’s motive was to kill or rob.
Obuku described the deceased as “a colleague, friend and unsung national hero” who “saved thousands of lives, in some cases working as the surgeon, anesthetist and superintendent.”
Dr Gwaluka’s body is currently at Iganga hospital.
