Prof Kagonyera Tired Of Village Beggars

Makerere University Chancellor Prof. Mondo Kagonyera has called out politicians in the Kigezi region on holding their people down in abject poverty, hospital by frustrating their privately initiated development programs.

Prof Kagonyera was speaking in light of ongoing efforts by certain political leaders in the region, to curtail tea growing in the area, something he said was to the detriment of the rural population.

Kagonyera, who represented Rubabo County in the 7th parliament until he lost the seat to Mary Paula Turyahikayo, said he was tired of attending to beggars’ needs every time he visits his home area.

“My dream has always been to see people in my home area, able to take care of themselves and prospering,. But every time I travel to upcountry I am accosted by scores of peasants each with a list of needs,” he said.

The professor was on Tuesday speaking to tea farmers from Kigezi region at a meeting organized by Kigezi High Land Tea Company that was held at Cephas Inn in Kabale town.

Of recent a section of politicians from Kabale district have come out to condemn tea growing, which is spearheaded  by Kigezi Highland Tea Company, owned by tycoon James Musinguzi Garuga, with claims that it had caused people to lack food, as most of the land is used for tea cultivation.

Such leaders, Prof Kagonyera said deserved to be cursed and rejected because they are not providing the right leadership.
