Ambrose Kyomukama, one of the presidential aspirants was on Monday arrested by police in Mbarara city for holding an unlawful meeting.
Kyomukama, who wants to stand on an independent ticket was arrested in Kijungu Market in Nyamityobora ward, Kakoba division.
He was arrested together with two other people for breaching the Health Ministry and Uganda Electoral Commission guidelines that prohibit open campaigns during the 2021/2026 elections.
The other suspects are Kiiza Maxon 30, a resident of Nkokonjeru and Isaac Magaragangye 30, a resident of Kiyanja cell in Kamukuzi division.
ASP Samson Kusasira the Rwizi Regional Police Spokesman says the three are being detained at Mbarara Central Police station.
“They face three charges of disobedience of lawful orders, holding an unlawful procession, and committing a negligent act likely to spread infection of disease,” he said.
The suspects, he says, were using two vehicles, a Fuso truck and Toyota Premio to mobilize masses.
Kasasira warned the public to adhere to the guidelines in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic which has so far claimed two people in Uganda.
