President Kiir Orders Cousin’s Prosecution after Shooting Incident

The South Sudan President, Salva Kiir has ordered for the immediate prosecution of his cousin Lual Marine Akook over a shooting incident that resulted in the death of 5 people.

Lual Marine and his bodyguards on Wednesday got involved in a wrangle in the capital Juba suburb of Sherikat. They reportedly opened fire instantly killing four men, including a local chief, and one woman.

Kiir in a statement issued by his office on Wednesday afternoon said he was saddened by the incident.

“H.E President Salva Kiir is deeply saddened about the shooting incident that occurred in Sherikat, Juba suburb early this morning,” said part of the statement.

Adding: “He condemns this in the strongest terms possible and has directed authorities to investigate the incident and t press charges against the perpetrators immediately.”

The Presidency stated that security agencies have restored tranquility in the area and have been stationed at the scene.

Lual, who was severely injured, is said to be in said to be in custody.

“The perpetrator has been apprehended by the authorities and is under close monitoring in hospital in critical condition. It is unclear whether he was injured during the incident or after his arrest,” noted the statement.


The President sent his sympathies to the families of the victims and urged restraint from the aggrieved communities.

The president concluded by asking South Sudanese not to politicize what he called “a clear criminal matter”.
