The deputy speaker of Parliament of Uganda, Hon. Jacob Oulanya has expressed concern over the trend of politicians mostly from the opposition defecting to join the ruling party, which he described as a lucrative business during the ongoing election season.
The deputy speaker who was addressing Journalists on Friday from Gulu, said that the trend had become so toxic that even some known NRM people have been coming out and lying that they were National Unity Platform candidates who just defected to join the ruling party.
‘’Even some NRM members are claiming that they are NUP people so they also want special treatment from the Party.’’ Said Oulanyah
The deputy speaker who doubles as the Vice Chairman of NRM in the Northern region said defection towards election is meaningless because people vote from their heart.
Recently, hundreds of Youths from Northern Uganda alleging to be members of NUP, crossed over to the NRM camp citing unfair treatment from NUP leaders as the main reason for their defection.
Nonetheless, Oulanyah, an MP for Omoro county said NRM will still win the majority of the votes in the region because they have the biggest number of supporters numbering over 11 million as per the NRM voter register
He also refuted claims that his agents are intimidating those of his opponents and defacing their posters
‘’In all my campaigns, I move with cameras and record everything and I am a very decent person who can’t do such a thing as intimidating my opponents because I know that I will win.’’
