Police have released Kyaddondo East Member of Parliament, Robert Kyagulanyi from Kiruddu Hospital to travel abroad for specialized medical attention.
There was drama at Entebbe International Airport on Thursday when the legislator commonly known by his music stage name, Bobi Wine, tried to fly out at around 9:00pm.
Police operatives led by Criminal Investigations Department Director, Grace Akullo forcefully picked Bobi and took him to Mulago National Referral Hospital extension at Kiruddu.
The forceful trip to the public hospital, according to Police Spokesman, Emilian Kayima, was meant to give government specialists a chance to examine Bobi who was allegedly tortured by security officers during arrest and detention.
“This investigation requires a medical examination of the alleged victim as close as possible in time to the alleged date of the commission of the offence by government medical experts,” Kayima said on Friday night.
Kayima said Bobi’s attempt to fly out on Thursday was premature since he had not yet been examined.
“Before the examination was done, the Uganda Police Force learnt of his intended departure yesterday August 30th, 2018 at Entebbe International Airport,” he noted, adding that the trip was halted.
“As a result, Hon. Kyagulanyi was halted from departure and was taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital (Kiruddu Complex) in company of specialist doctors from the same hospital for the purpose mentioned above.”
Opposition activists condemned government’s decision blocking Bobi from traveling.
Bobi’s wife Barbie Kyagulanyi said if the lawmaker’s medical trip was blocked he would face the risk of permanent disability.
Police said “now that Hon. Kyagulanyi has been examined by the medical team of experts at Mulago National Referral Hospital, the Uganda Police has allowed him to leave the medical facility.”
