Rwenzori Region police recovered a semi-machine gun and five rounds of ammunition in a Thursday operation launched to root out criminal gangs that have been terrorising the area and the neighbouring districts of Rwenzori.
The area Regional Police Commander SSP. Caesar Tusingwiire confirmed in a statement that joint security operations were conducted against suspected criminals camping and hiding in mountains of Kisinga, Nyakiyumbu and Kyondo subcounties under Bwera Division, Kasese District.
He said that in the night operations, eight suspects were arrested.
The police Commander also revealed that the operation, unknown thugs abandoned an unmarked SMG gun loaded with 5 rounds at a veranda of the area councillor identified as Janolesi Muhindo Muthubya of Kyabisoro, Rwakirema parish in Kasese district.
In a report released about the operation, police indicated that fingerprints were lifted from the recovered gun and submitted to the forensic lab for investigations to identify users if the owners are linked to any offences.
“It is pleasing to see a firearm recovered and removed from our areas, and we will be working to establish if it is linked to any recent incidents in our region or elsewhere,” Tusigwire said.
The police commander added that the recovery of a gun and ammunition will help to neutralize potential threats from the area.
