A police officer in Sembabule District has been arrested for killing one person and injuring two others.
The deceased has been identified as Jimmy Luyinda, a motorcyclist in Masaka and the injured people that are nursing wounds at Bamwe health centre in Mateete include Safari Murihona and another one only identified as Ssebayira.
The incident occurred in Nankondo Village in Lwebitakuli Sub County last week, when the mob attacked the home of Fred Ssenyondo and destroyed it before setting it ablaze, accusing him of bringing fetishes to the village which are terrorising residents.
Ssenyondo was prompted to call the police to quell the mob that reportedly wanted to lynch him and in the process of dispersing the mob, police fired bullets that killed Luyinda and injured two others.
Locals said that Luyinda had come to Nankondo to celebrate with his family after his father; Sperito Ssali won an election in the concluded LC3 NRM party primary elections.
Southern Regional police spokesperson, Mr Muhammad Nsubuga, said the arrested police officer will help them with investigations.
“Our preliminary investigations indicate that the trio was hit by stray bullets that were fired by our officers that had been deployed to disperse an angry mob, we warn the public against taking laws into their own hands.
