Old Kampala Police division has Tuesday afternoon arrested one of their officers for reportedly shooting dead a protester in Rubaga.
The officer under custody is identified as Justus Bwire, formerly in charge of Kironde Police Post located in Sembuule Zone, Rubaga division.
According to a statement from Kampala Metropolitan Police, Today at around 10:30am along Wankulukuku Road Sembule area in Rubaga Division Kampala City, there was an illegal protest at a factory over closure of a community road.
Reports indicate that the locals of the community were demonstrating against the factory for an alleged blockade of a drainage system which had caused floods in the area.
“Police officers from Kironde Police Post led by Officer in Charge Justus Bwire responded to the incident to restore peace,” said Police.
Adding that “the residents refused to leave the area despite police orders.”
The police officers fired in bullets to disperse the protesters but in the process, David Kibuuka, a resident and a village publicist, was shot and seriously injured.
The police officers rushed him to Mulago National Referral Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Kibuuka’s body has been taken for a postmortem and evidence will be crucial in investigations of the death.
Deputy KMP Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said Kampala Metropolitan Police South Command started the investigations.
“Assistant Superintendent of Police Justus Bwire, who led the police team, has been arrested and detained at Old Kampala Police Division as investigations continue,” Owoyesigire said.
