Police: NRM Supporter Trailed, Hit with Iron Bar in Makindye

A suspect has been arrested as police investigate circumstances under which a supporter of the ruling NRM party identified as Baker Musisi, was attacked on December 26.

Police said the violent incident of assault and robbery took place at around 10:00pm.

It is alleged that Musisi, who was riding his motorcycle registration number UEA 144B TV Star black in colour on Luwafu Road, Makindye Division, realised that two boda boda riders were trailing him.

“He reduced the speed and decided to stop thinking they were probably security officers signaling him to stop. One of the perpetrators parked in front of Musisi’s motorcycle and the other parked on the side,” said Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire on Monday.

One perpetrator reportedly charged at Musisi; “You are the people keeping the man in power”.

Owoyesigire said another perpetrator immediately hit Musisi with an iron bar on the head.

“Although the victim was wearing a helmet, the force of the iron bar broke its shield and injured his left eye,” said Owoyesigire, adding, “He was robbed of his wallet containing Shs 50,000, national identity card, a Techno phone valued at Shs 450,000 and campaign posters of presidential candidate Yoweri Museveni.”

“The suspects fled the scene. He was later found by passers-by and rushed to hospital.”

President Museveni recently warned against attacking NRM supporters. This was after videos showed NRM fans being undressed during the November protests in Kampala.

”Whoever started it will regret. Those who attacked people in Kampala [dressed in NRM T-shirts] will soon lose the appetite to touch it [T-shirts]…Even if they leave it abandoned there you will not touch it,” said Museveni.

Owoyesigire said Police at Katwe has intensified the hunt for the suspects and so far one has been arrested with the help of CCTV footage.

“The suspect is being held on allegations of robbery and assault,’ said Owoyesigire, adding, “Exhibits, including a blood stained shirt, have been recovered and investigations are on with aim of identifying other suspects.”
