Police Hunt for MP Who “Helped Murderer to Escape”

Police in Kisoro district are hunting for John Nizeyimana Kamara, the Bufumbira North Member of Parliament who is said to be on the run after aiding the escape of a suspected murderer.

The MP allegedly helped the suspected murderer of one Jack Serwumwe to escape police custody.

According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi regional Police spokesman, the deceased Serwumwe was a resident of Suma Village in Nyabwishenya sub county.

He was on  Tuesday night murdered and his head cut off and taken by the assailant(s).

The deceased according to police, was last seen taking alcohol in Maniriho Siriri bar on 9th April 2019 between 6pm to 9pm when he left the bar.

On Wednesday at around 7.30am his headless body was found by locals who called in Police.

The Police immediately arrested one Merida Maniriho, the bar owner together with her husband Maniriho Siriri.

The Police mouthpiece says however, that at the murder scene, a mobile phone was recovered and identified by locals as property of one John Sebagyenzi who was also arrested and detained at Nyabwishenya police post.

The Police post however, was “raided” by the MP Kamara who according to police, was escorted by UPDF officers.

These Maate says, forcefully removed the suspects from police custody.

It is understood that the suspect, Sebagyenzi has been serving as the election campaign manager for Hon Kamara.

Maate says that police are currently hunting for the legislator and a case has been registered under file number CRB 288/2019.

When Kamara was contacted by our reporter, he dismissed the police account saying he never took the suspect from the police cell.

The MP says police was curtailed by residents who were with him, from arresting Sebagyenzi.

He adds that the murder` suspect himself denies ownership of the phone, which he claims he had sold to someone else earlier.
