Police Halt Mbarara Motor Rally Over Museveni Visit

Police in Mbarara have halted a planned  motor rally that was scheduled for tomorrow Saturday at the Kakyeka Stadium.

The police through Regional Mouthpiece Ibin Senkumbi cited security concerns as the reason for cancellation.

Mbarara District Chairman J.B Tumusiime Bamuturaki had allowed the stadium to be used for the motor rally and was paid Shs 5million according to sources.

This was however challenged by a group of local young footballers who marched to the district offices in protest.

The youngsters claimed a motor rally at the stadium during the dry season would leave a significant damage on the pitch.

Police said another reason for the cancellation was that President Yoweri Museveni is expected in Mbarara on the same day to preside over a Golden Jubilee event organized by the Nyamitanga Diocese and that the two events cannot be held simultaneously.

There is also a graduation event for the Mbarara University of Science and Technology on the same day. Senkumbi says the local police are basically overstretched.
