Police in Mbarara on Tuesday evening encountered critical resistance as they arrested a notorious goon, who has allegedly been terrorizing Mbarara town and surrounding areas.
As police closed in on the thug’s home located in Kyerero Cell, Katete Ward, Nyamitanga division in Mbarara Municipality – – he fired a bullet at police, but he was not able to shoot the second.
The first shot from police destabilized him and he lost his gun — creating enough time for cops to grab him.
He has only been identified as Aguma. He did not die.
Mbarara District Police Commander (DPC) SP Jaffar Magyezi said they had been hunting for the suspect for quite a while now, adding that he is suspected to be an army deserter.
According to Magyezi , police had received complaints from locals who were saying that Aguma would attack them while wearing army camouflage uniform and a police jacket.
And on Tuesday as police officers ransacked his house, they recovered “a gun, a magazine, bullets, machetes, hammers, pangas and several tools used to break into houses”.
Other property he had been allegedly stealing, including television screens were also found in the house.
In Aguma’s house, Magyezi said, police recovered three pairs of army uniform, and a police jacket and hand cuffs.
Photographs and documents obtained from the suspect indicate that he was a corporal in the army, but police was not yet sure whether the documents were forged.
Aguma is currently at Mbarara Central Police Station.
