A Police joint team from Kampala Metropolitan area with the support of Bomb squad and forensic unit on Wednesday successfully controlled a likely explosion of a faulty gas cylinder opposite Mulago National Referral Hospital at a washing bay.
According to Police, the cylinder had been seen gaining mass placing the lives of the public with in the vicinity at risk.
In a statement released by the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesman ASP Luke Owoyesigire, the Police expressed gratitude towards the public for a timely report.
“We would like to thank the concerned members of the public for informing the police and for the level of vigilance they exhibited. We also want to thank our task teams for the swift response and effective management of the scene,” Owoyesigire said.
He added that the Police were able to close off a section of the road, from Mulago round about to Kubiri round about and cordoned off the scene.
Police said that team later established that the cylinder had a potential of exploding in a radius of 300m but after the long hours of efforts, it was neutralized in a controlled manner and no one was hurt in the operation.
The area is now safe and a cross section of the road that had been closed for hours on Wednesday during the operation has been opened for traffic.
“Once again we would like to thank the public for being alert and vigilant, we encourage them to keep conferring with the Police and report any suspicious matter to authorities,” reads part of the statement.
