Police in Najjera has arrested two men suspected to have been stealing motorcycles from around the country.
The suspects confessed to have stolen over 40 motorcycles.
Their arrest according to police followed a tip off by an informer on Monday this week.
It is said that a one Kenneth Bogere was reported by the informer that he was riding a stolen motorcycle registration number UEL 075Z which was allegedly stolen from Ibanda district recently.
In a statement by Kampala Metropolitan Police, the reported suspect was immediately arrested and the motorcycle impounded.
He was then tasked to lead police to his boss identified as Gideon Matovu who was also arrested and his motorcycle number UET 967Z also impounded.
Yesterday, police said that the owner of the stolen motorcycle UEL 075Z came with his logbook and a national ID and it was confirmed that the impounded motorcycle was his.
However, on searching Gideon’s house, the law enforcement body said that it found a forged logbook of the same motorcycle.
This prompted the OC CID Najjera Police Station to carry out search at the home of the two suspects in its custody.
At Gideon’s home, detectives recovered 75 Receipts, 64 logbooks, 182 agreements, 12 photocopies of national ID, and 15 receipt books which are believed to be forged.
“After the recovery, the suspect revealed to police that he owns over 40 motorcycles and the documents recovered were proof they were his and he hired them out,” said the police.
Later, when the riders of the alleged hired out motorcycles from Gideon got information about the investigations, for fear of being arrested, they handed the motorcycles to Najjera Police Station through their boda boda Chairman.
So far the recovered motorcycles are UEQ 400K, UEK 475M, UEL 472J, UEP 050N,UEK 878A and UEN 268W.
Earlier today suspects have been taken to Igorora Police Station, Ibanda district for deeper investigations.
Police said this is being done with the view of verifying the owners of the recovered motorcycles and arrest of other suspects in the racket.
