Police in Bulenga, Wakiso district have arrested a man suspected to be a fraudster who swaps People’s ATM cards in various banking machines and runs away with the money of the unsuspecting victims.
According to information from the Kampala Metropolitan Police, the suspect has been operating in Kampala Metropolitan Policing areas covering Kampala, Wikiso and Entebbe.
The suspect, Ronald Ampurira aged 35 years was arrested on Thursday after he had swapped a one Mulumba’s ATM card in Bulenga at one of the ATM machines and withdrawn Mulumba’s Shs 240,000.
The Metropolitan police posted on their Facebook page that Ampurira usually poses around ATM machines and when he sees a client who is not well knowledgeable on how to use the ATM machine, he rushes to the client and tries to help.
“He tells you to put your pin code and after mastering your code he exchanges his fake ATM with yours and he tells you the machine is not working. After you have gone, he uses your card to withdraw your money immediately,” reads the post.
He was arrested with 25 ATM cards in different names and of various banks. He has been charged with theft and police calls upon anyone who has been tricked this way to go to Bulenga Police station and identify the suspect.
