His arrest followed suspicions by Charles Mugisa, the owner of Muhorro Rest house bar where he was working.

Mugisa told this website that as his suspicion grew, he recently asked Mugisa to show him his national ID, which he couldn’t.

He says he then ordered other female barmaids to strip and check if he was indeed a woman.

On discovering that he was a man, they called in Muhorro police who arrested him.

It is said that before coming to Muhorro Rest House, the suspect worked at two other bars in the same area.

Speaking at the police station, Bukenya said he chose to become a woman because men’s jobs are hard whereas women’s jobs are simpler.

He said he lost his parents and for most of his life he grew up pretending to be a woman.

He said he previously worked as a house maid in Fort portal, and was able to get money to get a certificate in hair dressing.

At the bar, he says he was trying to raise money to start up his own salon.

His workmates at the bar, said Bukenya lived and acted perfectly as woman, save for the fact that he never shared the bathroom with them, and that they had never seen him naked.
