Photos: Uganda Hands Over Body of Slain Rwandan National

The body of a Rwandan man who was shot dead at the border by Rwandan security was last evening handed over to Rwanda authorities at the Katuna-Gatuna border in Kabale district.

Muremi Chabobuzi, a resident of Burera District in Rwanda’s Northern Province, was shot dead on Friday 20, 2020 at around 9:30 pm at Mushunga in Burera district.

The deceased, together with six other colleagues were crossing back home having spent the evening in Uganda’s Muguri trading centre drinking with friends.

On the way back, they were reportedly carrying bags of smuggled local liquor.

When soldiers started shooting, the victims tried to run back to Uganda but Chabobuzi was fatally shot in the chest.

Two others, Rusizi Rwamayanje and Ronald Nihabusa were also injured in the shoulder and the leg respectively.

Security from Kigezi region led by the Regional Police Commander Dan Byaruhanga and the Kabale District Police Commander Brian rushed to the border to investigate the incident.

Relatives of the deceased identify the body

Yesterday, a team of Ugandan authorities led by the Kabale district Vice Chairperson Bridget Asinga Tumwesigye, the Kabale district police commander Brian Ampaire and 19th battalion commander Robert Nahamya handed over the body to the Rwandan authorities who were led by the Burera district executive secretary Clement Uwirangiye who represented the Burera district mayor Marie Chantal Uwanyirigira.

Uwirangiye commended the Ugandan government for being concerned about lives of people from Rwanda.

He noted that the Rwandan security was forced to shoot at the victims because of the standing orders which bar illegal crossings.

Bridget Asinga Tumwesigye, the Kabale district vice Chairperson condemned the act saying that Rwanda security should not have resorted to shooting but should have attempted to arrest them.

Asinga also handed over a post-mortem report to the Rwanda authorities which confirmed that the deceased was killed by a bullet.

DPC Ampaire said that the two who were injured are currently being treated at Kabale Regional Referral hospital and the other five Rwandan nationals who were in the company of the victims are being detained at Ndorwa government prison on charges of illegal entry pending a court decision.

They include Bosco Manirafasha, Erike Nyakanengo, Kasasira Nyabirikimusi, Jean Damuru Habyarimana, Haruna Nakirutimana and Theoden Marishimana.
