The South Sudan President, Salva Kiir met the widow of SPLA founder, Dr. John Garang on Monday at the presidential palace in Juba.
The meeting, according to the President’s press unit, tackled the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCISS).
“President Salva Kiir Mayardit met on Monday at the State House in Juba with Madam Rebecca Nyandeng Garang and her accompanying delegation. The meeting touched on issues related to the implementation of the peace agreement,” said part of the statement.
The meeting came at the time when the armed opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar, who is also the principal signatory to the revitalized peace agreement, remains in the Sudanese capital Khartoum citing security concerns.
Kiir has appealed to Machar to return to Juba and address the problem from home but the latter is asking for six months to allow him prepare.
Interestingly, the meeting between Kiir and Mrs. Garang reportedly deliberated on the implementation of the peace agreement signed in September last year.
Adding: “Mama Nyandeng also stated that they are optimistic about the coming meeting that will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.”
The regional Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has invited Kiir and Machar to Addis Ababa this week over the implementation of the signed agreement.
