The construction and rehabilitation of Kayunga general hospital began early February 2018, being undertaken by Arab Contractors (U) Ltd at a tune of Shs 70b.
The two year project which involved among others; renovation of all staff houses and construction of new ones, x-ray, modern theatre, laboratories, an emergency block, medical laboratory and an outpatient department, is in the final touches, awaiting handover to beneficiaries.
The Ministry of Health PS Dr. Diana Atwine and the Director General Health Services Dr. Henry Mwebesa on July 1, 2020, inspected the newly refurbished Kayunga hospital as the contractor, Arab Contractors prepare to handover the Hospital to Ministry of Health for use.
“Inspection of Construction & Rehabilitation works at Kayunga Hospital to be upgraded to Regional Referral status to serve our people in that area. Civil works commenced on 08th Feb, 2018 and are now at 99.5% pending a few final touches as we prepare for official handover soon,” Dr. Atwine tweeted.
Among the new additions to the facility are; accident and emergency unit, physiotherapy and gym unit, private out-patient department and wards, kitchen and laundry, isolation wards, maintenance and workshop, hostels for intern doctors and quarters for nurses, as disclosed by Mr. Paul Kaliba, the project supervising engineer from the Ministry of Health last year.
The 40-year-old general hospital will soon be upgraded to a regional referral hospital with 300 beds, state of the art pharmacy, patients’ waiting hall, three laboratories, three fully equipped operating theaters, 32 doctors’ quarters and a hostel for medical interns.
