“We gave Mbabazi two options. To either return to Kampala peacefully or we take him back by force. He refused to oblige. So we had to arrest him,” Kaweesi told journalists at the police facility.

“We shall not allow him to go to Mbale whatsoever. He must follow laid down procedures of conducting meetings. He is now under our control and his convoy is being led back to Kampala,” added Kaweesi.

Mbabazi was last year sacked as Prime Minister before being impeached as NRM Secretary General.

Meanwhile, police led by Bukedi Area Police Commander Sam Omara today patrolled all the streets in what appears one of the biggest police operation in recent years.

In an interview with ChimpReports, Mbale Municipality mayor Mutwalib Zandya said he had no problem with the heavy deployment in his area.

“This is as a result of the wrangles between the President and his friend Mbabazi. If police are trying to contain any form of violence, I have no problem with them doing their job,” Zandya said.

Mbale Resort Hotel officials said they are not expecting Mbabazi at their premises today.

Efforts to reach the General Manager were futile as he was reportedly in a meeting.

A source at the hotel who preferred anonymity due to the gravity of the matter told this website that management had written to the Presidential hopeful informing him of the cancellation of the meeting.

“He was supposed to be here today after booking for a one day event but the management wrote to him about the change in programme,” the source told this website.
