The South Sudan dissident General Peter Gatdet Yaka was finally been laid to rest at his ancestral home in Myoum County, Unity State on Thursday.
Gen. Gatdet, who died as a commander of rebel group, South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA) and Chairman of South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) died of suspected heart attack in Sudanese capital Khartoum on Monday this week.
The body of the dissident general was accompanied from Khartoum by the SPLA/M in opposition delegates. Dr. Riek Machar, the leader of SPLA-IO reportedly ordered his movement members to take charge of the transportation and the burial of Gatdet.
Gatdet played a significant role in favor of Machar in the South Sudan civil war which broke out in December 2013, when he became the first Division commander to defect from SPLA to SPLA-IO.
Machar declared him the governor of the liberated Jonglei State that became the rebel stronghold in aggressive offensive against the mainstream SPLA under President Salva Kiir.
In August 2015 Gen. Gatdet and SPLA-IO Chief of Logistics, Gatkouth Gatkouth left Machar’s rebel movement and formed their own called South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA).
