Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) President Dr. Kizza Besigye on Saturday paid a call to the family of late Edson Nasasira alias Kakuru, who was in October shot dead by police in Rukungiri town after chaos broke out during age limit consultations in the area.
Kakuru, who died at the age of 22, was a taxi tout.
The battle in Rukungiri started when police that was being commanded by Richard Emuna, the Rukungiri District Police Commander blocked all routes heading to Rukungiri Municipal Stadium where the area MP Ronald Mugume was to address an age limit consultation rally.
Mugume had been accompanied by former FDC president Dr Kizza Besigye and other top FDC officials including Ingrid Turinawe and Patrick Oboi Amuriat.
Supporters braved teargas and live bullets and started pelting stones at police officers. In the process Kakuru was shot in the head and he died on spot.
Besigye called on the relatives because he “didn’t attend Kakuru’s burial” as “he was under detention at Nagalama police station” at the time.
Dr. Besigye laid wreath on Kakuru’s grave and later delivered his condolence message to the family members.
